He is one of the dance world’s real superstars. Now Akram Khan Company comes to Dansens Hus with “Until the Lions”. Classical kathak meets contemporary elements and specially written music when Akram Khan Company with three dancers and four live musicians on stage performs the fate of Princess Ambas.

Akram Khan’s latest production, Until the Lions, is a magnificent piece of new composed music. The performance is based on the book Until the Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata of Karthika Naïr. A book that in turn is a recasting and interpretation of the Indian epos Mahabharatha.

The story is about the young princess Amba who is being abducted, prone to abuse and takes the gods to help to punish the perpetrators. She turns into a warrior and demands vengeance. Akram chooses to raise the female figure to a stronger position:

”As in many myths, the female characters are often the unsung heroes, the figures of strength and imagination and endurance. It is their unsung stories in particular, that still haunt me today.”
Akram Khan

The Princess Amba is portrayed by the dancer Chin-Ying Chien which in 2016 was awarded the Outstanding Female Performance (Modern) Award at the National Dance Awards.
