The Large Professor live at Fasching

By on September 21, 2019

For a long time, William Paul Mitchell (Large Professor) made music at home in Flushing, in the Queens neighborhood of New York, on a tape recorder used to cut different songs together. When he came across a Casio SK-1 sampler, it was the beginning of a music career that would take him from the apartment into the world.

At the age of seventeen he produced beats for Eric B. & Rakim’s classic album Let The Rhythm Hit ‘Em (1990) and soon went on to produce Kool G Rap & DJ Polo.

In 1989, the Large Professor joined the Main Source. The album Breaking Atoms was released two years later and it was there that Nas debuted as a rapper – in the song “Live at the Barbeque”. Nas and the Large Professor have collaborated several times since then – including Nas’s debut Illmatic – which can definitely claim the title of “the world’s best hip hop album”. They would soon cooperate again.

During the 1990s, the Large Professor also worked with artists such as Busta Rhymes, Mob Deep, Big Daddy Kane and many more.

On his own, Large Professor has made sampling heavy albums with a wide range of guest artists. Hit songs such as “The Mad Scientist” and “ijuswannachill” have placed him on the map as one of hip hop’s most elegant samplers. And the latest single Hard as Steel (which he did with DJ Duke) is a grand hip-hop anthem powered by powerful strings and a fat beat.

Live Professor Large offers eclectic DJ sets that show his breadth, deep knowledge and his love for hip-hop.
