Program Release For Afro-Swedish History Week

The Ethnographic Museum offers a packed program to mark the Afro-Swedish History Week which starts October 8 and ends October 13. During the week, unique lectures, guided special screenings and family programs at Ethnographic are held. But we already sneakily start today October 4 by showing Christian Nyampeta’s movie It was beautiful sometimes.
Some of the highlights of the week are French scientist Françoise Verges’s visit to the museum for a lecture on the end of European slavery.
Actor Josette Bushell-Mingo is directing the theatrical performance Black memory played by National Black Theater Sweden at the museum.
There will be several interesting panel discussions about black women’s history, the forms in Swedish film and how historical photography can be displayed in a contemporary context. Participating guests during the week include journalist Rafaela Stålbalk Klose, researcher Ylva Habel, actor Nanna Blondell and others.
Afro-Swedish History Week is presented in collaboration with the Afro-Swedes’ national organization and the cultural association TRYCK with the support of the Institut Français de Suède and Stockholm Women’s History. At the center of the week is the Freedom Day, October 9, which celebrates the abolition of slavery at Swedish Saint Barthélemy in 1847 and is a day to remember slavery and the victims of the slave trade.
