IKEA ART EVENT 2018

By on March 28, 2018

Art should be democratic, that has we on IKEA always thought. We are happy to re-introduce IKEA ART EVENT – this time with playful glass art. Artists from different parts of the world have created eight figurines inspired by manga, comic drawings and traditional glassware from Småland. The collection will be premiere on April 20 at selected IKEA department stores.

For IKEA ART EVENT 2018, nine contemporary artists have developed eight personal works in close collaboration with skilled craftsmen at Målerås glass mill in Småland – a stone’s throw from the place where IKEA was founded.

– We wanted to investigate what happens when combining traditional crafts with newer art forms. I think we have found something interesting that hopefully can introduce glass art for a new generation, says Henrik Most, creative leader IKEA of Sweden.

The participating artists are Michael Lau, Coarse (Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk), Arkiv Vilmansa, Nathan Jurevicius, Junko Mizuno, Joe Ledbetter, James Jarvis and Ludvig Löfgren, certified glass blower at Målerås and the only artist who is used to working with glass . For the others, glassware is a new experience.

– Drawing is always the foundation of my work, and this project is very exciting because the result is a completely different type of product – in a material that has a solid history. I did not realize that glass blowing is such a human and living process, said James Jarvis, UK.

A unobtrusive fox, a reversible V-sign and an autobiographical rabbit are some of the pieces that are part of the collection. Inspiration is gathered from surreal pop art to mythological symbols and cultural references.

– ART EVENT celebrates the fantastic world of the collect objects and the imaginative universe of the figurine. They awaken our imagination, represent everyday life and turn everything up and down in a fun and playful way, says Henrik Most, creative leader IKEA of Sweden.

IKEA ART EVENT temporary collection is sold at seven IKEA department stores in Sweden: Barkarby, Kungens Kurva, Bäckebol, Kållered, Malmö, Kalmar and Älmhult.

Sales start: April 20, 2018
