Winemakers Dinner With Dan Swincer From Jacobs Creek

Dan’s high profile winemaking career began after graduating from the internationally famous University of Adelaide ‘Roseworthy’ campus with a Bachelor degree in Agriculture Science (Oenology). His skills have taken him halfway around the world, working on vintages in the Napa Valley in the United States, as well as the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and other wine regions in Australia.

Dan joined the Gramp & Sons winemaking team in the Barossa in 2006, where he quickly proved his outstanding winemaking talent. Initially he worked under the legendary winemaker Philip Laffer, then Chief Winemaker of Pernod Ricard Australia. Dan gained experience making fine aromatic whites and full-bodied chardonnays before specialising in his passion for making high quality red wines.

His talent and experience were recognised by The Wine Society when in 2011 he was voted Young Winemaker of the Year. He has also gained a lot of as both Judge and Associate Judge at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show, Barossa Wine Show and Royal Melbourne Wine Show. He was also one of 12 highly regarded wine professionals to be selected as a scholar in the acclaimed ‘Len Evans Tutorial’ in 2015.

Since August 2015, Dan became Chief Winemaker of the highly esteemed Australian fine wine brand St Hugo, prior to being appointed Chief Winemaker of Pernod Ricard Australia in 2018.

Dan attributes much of his know-how to the mentors he has had the opportunity to work with throughout his career. These have included Don Young who showed him the importance of great attention to detail, Sue Mickan whose drive for quality and lateral thinking were an inspiration, and Sam Kurtz whose depth and breadth of knowledge in red winemaking are almost unsurpassed according to Dan. “Working with an exceptional people who challenge your thinking is the only way to grow and develop.”
