By on June 27, 2017

Yesterday the gates opened to Västerbotten’s estimate visitor center in Burträsk.

The visitors’ center in Burträsk has been an estimated visitor destination since the beginning of 2012. In the summer of 2016, a total of 10,000 visitors came to Burträsk to see and enjoy Västerbotten’s mysterious history.

– There is a great interest to know more about Västerbotten cheese, its history, production and what makes the cheese so unique. Many have traveled a long way, from southern Sweden, but we have also had visitors from Germany, Holland, Japan and the USA, for example, says Helena Ahlgren, Brand Manager Västerbotten’s cheese at Norrmejerier.

This summer, the Visitor Center is open every day at 10-17 from 26 June to 18 August, and the café offers light lunches, such as classic Västerbotten cheese pie with accessories, but also sandwiches and cakes in a varied selection. In the cheese shop, Västerbottensost Extra Lagrad is available for sale, along with other local delicacies.

Twice a day at 11.00 and 14.00, free guided tours are offered in the exhibition, which gives an insight into Västerbotten’s cheese long and fascinating history.

Nobody really knows what happened on the famous day of 1872 when Ulrika Eleonora, the dairymaid, created Västerbotten cheese. The theories are many, but still nobody knows why Västerbottensostbara can be produced at the small dairy in Burträsk. Welcome to the place where everything started and where Västerbotten cheese still is made according to the same secret recipes!
