Skate 2019 arrives to Stockholm and Odenplan

By on July 11, 2019

SKATE is a hiking exhibition about skateboarding culture, produced by the Kristianstad Region Museum in collaboration with young skateboarders.

The exhibition shows personal stories of young people and young adults from the Bryggeriet gymnasium in Malmö and local skate clubs around Sweden. With cameras and skateboards they shape their everyday life and their experiences. Sound, film, photo and text – moments from a subculture in constant motion.

The exhibition is mobile and visits public places in eight different cities in Sweden. From Umeå in the north to Malmö in the south, starting in May 2019.The entire exhibition is housed in two containers and contains digital screens, projectors, printed matter and skate objects.

– Our goal was to convey a contemporary phenomenon. The work has been going on from the idea stage for four years and results in the exhibition Skate 2019, Pushing Borders International Skate Conference and Smörgåsbord Skate Film Festival. Skate has during this time developed from being a passion for some to a fascination and entertainment for everyone. The art of taking the urban environment into possession through skateboarding and changing it is now rolling in the whole country, Dragan Nikolic, Project Manager Skateboard Culture.

The purpose is to show the breadth of experiences and expressions that exist within young skateboard culture in Sweden today and to let more people take part of it.

Design and production by Nils Lilja and Marcelo Rovira Torres, in collaboration with Blekinge Institute of Technology and the National Heritage Board.

The project is financed with the support of the Alliance Fund.
