– This is the only musical in the world that I would accept. I was just shocked when I was asked. It felt so natural, as American Idiot” was an album we grew up with, the soundtrack of my generation. We could relate to the music because it reflected our upbringing in Borlange. I said yes right away because it felt like I was already the lead role character, says Viktor Norén.
The musical is based on punk rock band Green Day’s album American Idiot” in 2004, which lay on first place on the charts in 19 countries and has been listed as one of the all time best albums by the likes of Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly. The album is designed as a musical and is about the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center – a period in which the American dream has become a nightmare.
I think the American Idiots theme and meaning is more relevant than ever. It‘s important to promulgating the message “Don´t wanna be an American idiot” now again given all the chaos going on in the world while Donald Trump knocking on the door of the White House, said Viktor Norén.
The show American Idiot” is a depiction of youth lost in a society still recovering from the September 11, 2001. The audience will follow the three friends’ flashbacks of their rebellious teenage mixed with live music from Green Day’s songcatalog.
– There will be no ordinary musical but more as a grand rock concert with 29 singers, dancers and musicians who portrays Green Day’s classic hits, says director Philip Zandén.
