KATRIN WESTMAN
AVHÄNGDA MANTLAR
17.11 – 17.12, 2016

Vernissage Thursday November 17 at 17-20.

Galleri Andersson/Sandström concludes autumn season in 2016 with a young and powerful artistry. Katrin Westman (b. 1987) works with abstract painting, but is not content to work on the canvas without letting her expression look out into the room and adopt sculptural form. Avhängda mantlar explores the boundaries of abstract painting and shows the classic painting constant topicality.

In Avhängda mantlar presents “painting in the expanded field” and the viewer is met by installations and a large-scale, abundant and colorful paintings.

There is a strong human presence in Westmans work. The artist’s distinct brush strokes across the canvas reveals the movement in her work process and the viewer can follow the hand’s journey across the canvas. Westman is often based on historical references and the human anatomy in her paintings. Several of the works in the exhibition are inspired by the Italian 1600-century artist Giovanni Bernini’s sculptures. By digging into the past, she ends up in the moment.

I want to be caught by the painting as if it were rampant. The picture is a start. Since everything is done on a surface in the meeting with the paint and body together in the movement to be formed into objects in the room. My conceptions boundaries stretched for what painting is all about by working with sculptural painting. – Katrin Westman

Humor is as present as the history of art in Westmans work and she has been rewarded for her aptitude to make use of the colors ability to touch. Portrait (2015) is a series of 15 paintings against their will coexist on the same wall. They rest on the border between present themselves and turning their backs to each other.

The inherent power of the work Mussels (2016) held together by a strap and gives the impression that at any time can break free. Something spiritual and sacred resting over the Mantel I (2016). The of hung cloth rests heavily against the wall and have currently liberated its owner from liability.

Galleri Andersson/Sandström presented Katrin Westman for the first time in 2015, in Umeå Institute of Art degree show Between the Devil and the Deep Sea. This will be the artist’s first major solo exhibition.
