Artipelag is spending the autumn and winter season looking back at one of the world’s most famous collaborations – between the pioneering Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela and the classic luxury brand Hermès.

Between the years 1997 and 2003, Martin Margiela was employed by the French fashion house to create a fashionable collection for women. The collaboration would prove to be one of fashion history’s most exciting businesses.

Martin Margiela started his own fashion house Maison Martin Margiela in 1988, but in contrast to the fashion world’s personal culture, he chose a much more anonymous appearance. Margiel’s starting point is a deconstruction of fashion’s traditional performances in favor of a more artistic appearance that has established him as one of the most avant-garde representatives of the fashion world.

Hermès was founded nearly 200 years ago, and the company’s handbags, scarves and dresses have been born of classical style icons like Grace Kelly, Ingrid Bergman, and British Queen Elizabeth II over the years.

Perhaps you might think that the cooperation between Margiela and Hermès would be filled with contradictions, but Margiela has proved to be a masterly interpreter of Hermès DNA. His starting point is the natural and mature woman rather than the eternal ideal of the fashion world. Margiela dresses women in genuine material, with the classic sewing art to articulate the individual models’ architecture. The result is a remarkable hybrid between Margela’s iconoclasm and Hermes’s timeless quality.

The exhibition is taking place between 26 October 2018 and 10 March 2019 and was originally assembled by Margiela for the Fashion Museum Provincie Antwerpen. At Artipelag, creations from Martin Margielas own brand are presented in a dialogue with the work he performed for Hermès.
