Between 23 August and 2 September 2018, the Bergman Festival 2018 will be held at Dramaten. H.K.H. Crown Princess Victoria is the festivals official protector of  in 2018, when Ingmar Bergman should be 100 years old.

– We are pleased that Crown Princess Victoria becomes the official protector of the Bergman Festival. Next year’s festival will be an especially important year for the festival, when we together with many others honor one of Sweden’s most distinguished and important artists, says Eirik Stubø, theater director.

The Bergman Festival was founded in 2009 by Dramaten, with the goal of being a concern for contemporary national and international theater art by presenting performances from all over the world in Ingmar Bergman’s spirit. The festival was a great success and inspired for a follow-up festival 2012 and 2016.

The next festival will take place in 2018, the year when Ingmar Bergman would be 100 years old, which will be noted in many places both in Sweden and internationally. The festival program will be presented in detail in spring 2018. In addition to the international guest game, Dramaten will also premiere a series of own festival productions. Starting points will be Ingmar Bergman’s extensive work as a writer and as a theater and film director, but the festival will also contain performances that are not directly linked to his work. For eleven days, the theater is filled with performances, seminars, concerts, film shows, workshops and more.

Since its inception, the festival has introduced international productions from some of the most significant names in performing arts such as Katie Mitchell, Heiner Goebbels, Ivo van Hove, Emma Dante, Thomas Ostermeier and many more. The festival also hosts a meeting with young future directors and artists from different countries. The latest 2016 festival had over 10,000 visitors and became a success with critics and audiences.
