39,223 Stockholmers gave blood in 2018 – more is needed

In recent years, blood donation has decreased. Now, the alarming downward trend seems to have slowed down. More blood donors are needed for there to always be blood for those who need it.

For the first time in several years, the number of donated blood bags was comparable to the previous year. 71 721 bags of blood were donated by the Stockholmers in 2018 compared to 71 808 in 2017, shows new statistics from the Blood Center in Stockholm.

Even in the case of newly registered blood donors, the number is comparable to the previous year. 10,235 people registered for the new 2018 compared to 10,480 in 2017.

– It is gratifying that almost as many people donated blood and newly registered in 2018 as in 2017. More blood donors are needed in the county, every day about 100 liters of blood is used for injured and sick patients in Stockholm County’s health care, says Fredrik Boström, medically responsible doctor at the Blood Center in Stockholm County.

More women than men are newly registered

5,583 women and 4,652 men newly registered as blood donors in Stockholm County in 2018. Among those who gave blood, the distribution was more even, with 19,559 women and 19,674 men.

Men can give blood four times a year and women three times a year. The entire visit takes about 30 minutes.

In order to become a blood donor, one must have turned 18 and weigh more than 50 kilos. Blood is a fresh product and lasts only for six weeks. It cannot be manufactured artificially.
